Manchester United, English Premier League (EPL) side, on Wednesday night, suffered a shock 1-2 defeat at the hands of Istanbul Basaksehir, Turkish SuperLig champions, in the UEFA Champions League (UCL).

In the encounter played in Turkey, Basaksehir capitalised on a sluggish United defending to score two first-half goals and hang on to the precious victory.

It was Basaksehir’s first victory in the UCL group stage in their first appearance at this stage of the competition, while Man United’s loss ended their ten-match away winning run.

The Red Devils were punished by Demba Ba, a former Chelsea striker, who scored the first goal after the visitors’ defence had contrived to gift the Senegalese the ball. The 35-year-old ran clear from the halfway line before dispatching confidently for a 1-0 lead.

Basaksehir, only formed in 1990, doubled their lead five minutes from halftime when Juan Mata was disposed of the ball.

Anthony Martial halved the deficit with a header from Luke Shaw’s cross before halftime to set up a second-half that failed to inspire, allowing Basaksehir a famous win.

In other matches, Timo Werner scored two penalties as Chelsea secured a comfortable 3-0 win against ten-man Rennes. Sevilla came from two goals down to defeat Krasnodar 3-2, while Juventus and Barcelona also secured comfortable wins. Paris Saint Germain lost 1-2 at RB Leipzig in Germany.
