Liverpool suffer fourth straight defeat as Everton win Merseyside derby

Liverpool were humbled by Everton in the Merseyside derby played at the Anfield Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson consigned Jurgen Klopp’s men to a fourth consecutive league defeat.

The win is Everton’s first Merseyside derby victory since October 2010, and also the Toffess’ first win at Anfield in 22 years.

Everton came out the blocks and took an early lead with a third minute goal from Richarlison. The Brazilian forward collected James Rodriguez’s defence-splitting pass before placing a shot into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead.

Liverpool had scored only twice in their past five EPL matches and in Jordan Pickford, Everton’s goalkeeper, they found a wall they could not breach. The England international denied Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Saido Mane and Roberto Firmino before halftime.

Everton could have doubled their advantage before the break but Seamus Coleman failed to convert his header from 10 yards out.

The second half continued just as the first ended, with Pickford denying Mane while his sturdy defenders blocked the Reds from having a field day.

Everton played on the counter as the half wore on and they finally made one count when Richarlison led a charge that ended with Trent Alexander-Arnold bringing down Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box. Sigurdsson dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom corner to seal the 2-0 win.

The loss also means Liverpool have lost four straight games at Anfield in the top-flight for the first time since 1923.

Everton’s win brings them level with Liverpool on 40 points from 24 matches, with a game less than their opponent.
