This was one of the rhythms that demonstrated not only a people’s strength, but also their unique identity. Rhythms reveal a lot about a people’s cultural identity, and music was one of those traits for the people of Edo State, which was then known as Bendel State in 1976.

1976 will be remembered by many Afemai, as they are affectionately known, both young and old, because it was the year when one of their own, Sir Waziri Oshomah, issued his LP.

“My father was addicted to listening to this LP, and that addiction was contagious because we didn’t just join him; we grew up with it, and I’m scared we’ll pass it on to our own children,” Ozoya, a Lagos-based entrepreneur, told GTAR.

This week on Godfrey Times African Rhythms GTAR, we’re featuring Sir Waziri Oshomah’s 1976 LP.
