Ramadan begins Thursday, March 23, according to astronomical estimations.

Muslims will sacrifice for a month to draw closer to God. Fasting is to help believers focus on their thoughts and actions.

Ramadan’s main ban is fasting. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during prayer periods. The prohibitions begin before “Fajr” and extend until “Maghreb,” which closes the day’s fast.

This month of deprivation prohibits more than fasting. Smoking and sex are prohibited.

By outlawing insults, lying, and crimes, Ramadan encourages positive deeds.

Some hardline Muslims restrict swearing, music, and makeup.
