President Bola Tinubu signed the Nigeria data protection bill.

At a workshop in Abuja on Tuesday, NDPB national commissioner Vincent Olatunji announced the bill’s signature.

The law allows the NDPC to replace the NDPB.

The panel must be independent and preserve citizens’ privacy.

A national commissioner will oversee personal data processing.

The law lets Nigerians sue for data breaches, TheCable reports.

Personal data must be “processed in a fair and accountable manner,” by law.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari urged the national legislature to approve the law on April 4.

The former president requested it under section 58 (2) of the constitution.

“Under section 58, sub-section 2 of the 1999 constitution as amended, I forward the Nigeria data protection bill for consideration and approval by the senate,” Buhari wrote.
