Comoros delivered the biggest upset yet at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a 3-2 win over Ghana in the final Group C encounter played on Tuesday.

With the defeat, the Black Stars crashed out of the AFCON after only one point from three matches. It was the first time in their history that Ghana have failed to win at least one group stage match having made 22 past visits to the finals.

Comoros went ahead on four minutes through El Fardou Ben Nabouhane’s strike before an overzealous Andre Ayew slid into Salim Ben Boina, Comoros’ goalkeeper, injuring him in the process.

The referee handed Ayew a red card following a review of the incident on the pitch side monitor.

Comoros then doubled the lead through Ahmed Mogni’s unstoppable drive into the bottom right corner.

Ghana, however, fought back with strikes from Richmong Boakye and Aleksander Djiku with hopes rising for an unlikely win.

It was Comoros that claimed their first ever AFCON victory, with Mogni scoring again five minutes from time to send the team’s bench into frenzy.

The AFCON debutants would wait to see if they can still qualify as one of four best losers.

RESULTS

  • Malawi 0-0 Senegal
  • Zimbabwe 2-1 Guinea
