Favour Ofili has won the silver medal in the women’s 200 meters race at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham.

The 19-year-old sprinter, who became the third Nigerian athlete to feature in the women’s 200m final at the Commonwealth Games, clocked 22.51 seconds to finish behind Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah at the Alexander Stadium on Saturday night.

The race, which was the last event of the day, saw Nigeria claim its 30th medal of the championships.

Mary Onyali was the first Nigerian athlete to have competed in that division in 1994.

Thompson-Herah clinched the gold medal in 22.02 seconds to set a record at the games while Christine Mbaoma of Namibia came third.

In the women’s freestyle 76 kg category final, Rueben Amuchechi Hannah was beaten by Justina di Stasio of Canada.

The Canadian out-grappled Rueben 4-2 to deny the Nigerian the gold.

Isau Ogunkunle also defeated Raj Alagar of India to the bronze in the third place match in the men’s singles classes of 3-5.

Ogunkunle comfortably beat Alagar in a three-game set of 11-3,11-6,11-9.

At the end of Day 9, Nigeria has now secured 9 gold, 8 silver, and 13 bronze medals.
