NIGERIA — The reactions trailing the planned removal of petrol subsidy by the federal government appeared on the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.
The Punch reports that the federal government has asked governors to enforce compulsory COVID-19 vaccination for workers in their states. Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, has vowed to end herdsmen’s attacks in the state, the newspaper says.
The Nation says the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commenced mobilisation of civil society groups ahead of its planned nationwide protests against proposed petrol subsidy removal. The newspaper reports that experts have said the policies of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cannot rescue the naira.
Daily Independent says the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has warned that the refusal to release Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, will be a grave mistake. The newspaper says stakeholders are doubting the rebirth of the national carrier.
The Guardian says the federal government’s autogas plan has failed to yield the desired result ahead of the proposed petrol subsidy removal. Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, has declared 19 operators of illegal refineries in the state wanted, the newspaper reports.
The Nigerian Tribune says the All Progressives Congress (APC) may adopt a consensus method for electing its national leader in the February convention. The newspaper reports that the federal government spent about N56.9 billion on women and youths in 2021.
